High flow catalytic converters worth

We get calls almost everyday from customers wanting to know how much a "high flow" or "performance" catalytic converter will cost for their car. Well this may come as a surprise to some and will really bust the bubble of what some companies are selling, These substrates are made like a beehive honeycomb and are comprised of cells per square inch across their surface. In theory, an aftermarket cat is higher flow than it's O. Modern OEM cats do flow better then the older ones, despite doing a much better job reducing emissions.

I've seen some testing done from labs using dyno mules and it basically works out like this So, on a hp engine, dropping the cats is worth about 13hp while swapping to "hi-flow" versions gains you in the hp range. What most guys end up struggling with and needing to be concerned with though isn't the little gain from removing the cats, but the fact that mods and tuning often result in higher exhaust temps that melt ceramic cored OEM and "hi-flow" cats.

Also, most people end up facing this question when they upgrade their exhaust system with headers and a new catback. They will often go from something like a 2. At that point they have to go back to the same "expensive and legal or cheap and illegal" question. Overall, there is almost no reason, IMO, for someone with anything but a heavily modded car or dedicated racer to consider dropping the OEM cats. It can get you in a lot of trouble for very little actual gain. Edit to add: The numbers I quoted above were for naturally aspirated cars.

As "itslikeanegg's" example proves, it gets a little different when you start talking about turbo cars, especially modded ones. Lux Hauler. I used to take mine off, bust up and remove the honeycomb through a combination of drilling and hammering wear a respirator. I call it the covert cat delete. Will pass inspection unless sniffed. Modern cats are a lot more efficient and less restrictive in general than older cats, but still not as good as a free flowing system.

My regular catalytic converters are going bad, so my question is are the Hi Flow Catalytic Converters worth the money? Share Share this post on Digg Del. I've installed Magnaflow cat-back systems on both my TA's convertible and WS6 with the Magnaflow high-flow catalytic converters even though catalytic converters are not required in Alberta, Canada.

I added the high-flow catalytic converter to mainly reduce the emissions smell on vehicle start-up wife and kids complained too much The sound still sounds great. From what I had read, they do help with flow but I don't think it was anything great. I did the broom handle mod. Originally Posted by 35thAnniZ Last edited by JonB; at PM.
